Process is the focus point of this workshop, where we will be challenging the conventional perception of a sculpture by breaking with our habitual thought patterns. Through a series of creative exercises, we will challenge you to look at your creative practice with new eyes and further develop your individual artistic expression.

Clay is a living material, which means that we cannot be sure of the final result. In this workshop we will use this unpredictability as an opportunity to create something extraordinary by being curious about what our starting point can develop into.

You will be guided through the process of creating a unique ceramic sculpture, from beginning to end result.

 CLASS OVERVIEW:

Over the course of 4 intensive sessions, and in a small group of 6 participants, you will work on materializing your ideas, while continuously being challenged in your approach and conceptual perspective.

The first session is about sketching and exploring the materials. We will discuss how they behave and interact, and what possibilities and limitations they possess. Through drawing exercises, and material discussion, we will create a visual starting point and slowly give shape to the clay. We will get a feel for how the material behaves and talk about how to process it at different stages.

The second time we meet, we will work with the clay in what is called the leather hard stage, where we can further develop the sculpture and refine the shape.

Third session is about detail-work and finishing. We will explore surface textures and discuss different glazing options and approaches.

The fourth session is dedicated to glazing. We will address the unpredictability of the glaze and how you can set up a conceptual framework for the final appearance of your piece, when the result cannot be given in advance. We will talk about wax, tape, and other tricks. If you want to leave your piece raw, you are welcome to.

You can freely choose between stoneware or porcelain, and our many glazes for your sculpture.

The class runs over three days within the same week, plus a fourth day for glazing after the bisque fire. The duration of each session is 3 to 4 hours, with 15 min for cleaning at the end of each session:

1st session: 5 pm - 8 pm

2nd session: 12 am - 4 pm

3rd session: 5 pm - 8 pm

 4th session: 5 pm - 8 pm

 Total: 13 hours
